I chose this experiment because i wanted to know what the best solution to remove rust was.

What solution best removes pre rusted BB's, baking soda or Vinegar?

Hypothesis

I think the baking soda will best remove the the rust from BB's because baking soda has more purposes than vinegar.

General Plan

  1. First i set up both Vinegar in two seprate small tins
  2. Then i insuteed ten metal BB's into the metal tins, i had six diffrent tins, two for each day, Vinager in one and baking soda in the other.
  3. Collect data each day and jot it down in my note book. i did that for each day.
  4. After finishes experiment enter all data into wiki spaces.

Background Research

Rust is a reddish-brown, flaky oxide formed on iron when it is exposed to moist air and becomes corroded. The chemical reaction of iron reacting with moist air to form rust is 'Fe2O3 -> X H20', where X = the amount of water present. This variable also determines the shade of color of the rust. The rust, or iron oxide, is a solid and has the same general form of its metal origin, however the oxide is much more weak and brittle. This brittle oxide does not adhere well to the surface of the metal and often flakes off, otherwise known as "pitting". Large amounts of pitting lead to structural weakness and eventually metal disintegration. Iron rusting is a common problem affecting cars, bicycles, and a wide range of other important items used in everyday life, therefore if bacteria affects the rusting rate of iron, anti-bacterial solutions could be used to help prevent or slow the rusting of these items. Every year, millions of dollars in damages are lost due to corrosion. Thus far, there are three common methods to preventing the.

Detailed Procedure


  1. Gather all suplise needed which includes baking soda, vinegar, rusted BB's, tins to contain the BB's, and water.
  2. Set up all of the tins, put ten BB's in each of the six tins three being 8ml of vinegar and three 8ml baking soda(and 8ml water for the baking soda) two tins for each day, put a lable next to one vinegar tin and one baking soda tin to tell which day data will be collected.
  3. Collect the data that is shown each day the BB's are removed from there substances on the correct date.
  4. once all data is collected put the data on a spreen sheet and ,make the raw data into a graph for all four days, then insert each one into wiki spaces

Data Analysis

  • Day one graph one consists of Vinegar having the most success on removing the rust. On the .7 scale one being the most rust removed and 7 being the least removed there were two in the first slot and six in the second slot and two in the third slot.
  • Day two chart two Baking soda had the most rust removed nine in the first slot and one int the second slot
  • Day three chart three Vinegar had the most rust removed, four in the first slot, four in the second slot and two in the third slot.
  • Day four chart four Vinegar had the most rust removed there were six in the second slot four in the third slot

Conclusion

My hypothises was that the Vinager would have the most success removing the rust. My experiment supported my hypothesis it showed that each trial i had with my experiment, the substance that removed rust the most each time was Vinegar.





Discussion

this information is important becuase oepl may not understand that there is not need to use expesive name brand rust removind chemicals< whe you have house hold items to work at just the same sucsess rate, Vinegar and baking soda both work on removing rust from metal.

Benefit to Community and/or Science


People may not know, that some house hold items do remove rust, it helps the learm that the dont have to by expencive chemicals to remove rust from tyhere metala products, they can use baking soda or vinegar, instead of those other chemiclas.

Abstract

I wanted to do my experiment becuase i wanted to find out what solutions was able to best remove rust, between the two solutions baking soda and vinegar, two house hold common idems, that most likely are used everyday. Also it would be noce to know what helps rmove rust, becyase im syd=ure that most suffer from rust enveloping ther metal products.
